Weekend Treatment: Three Oils That Are Great for Hair and Two That Require Caution

In recent years, hair care oils have experienced a real boom. More and more people are using them because they are natural, usually not too expensive, only a few drops are needed for one treatment, and they are considered to be very effective.

However, it should be kept in mind that no one oil is effective for everything. Some oils can be great for skin care, but can cause adverse reactions on the scalp, which has different needs.

Argan oil

The famous Moroccan oil is rich in vitamins D and E, as well as antioxidants, which provides hair with moisture and helps with scalp inflammation in dry skin and dandruff. It creates a protective barrier around the hair, preventing split ends and unwanted frizz, while also giving it shine.

Argan oil also helps with hair growth, as the phenolic compounds it contains stimulate the scalp and strengthen follicles, creating a favorable environment for new, thicker, and healthier hair.

It can be used as a hair mask to hydrate and prevent dandruff – gently massage into scalp and leave on for 15-30 minutes. Also, warm a few drops between your palms and apply to scalp and lengths of hair, especially ends, to protect against dryness and frizz.

Rosemary oil

Rosemary oil is considered one of the best natural oils for hair growth. Some research suggests that it blocks the production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone, which may help slow hair loss.

It is known to improve scalp circulation, reduce inflammation, and may even slow down graying of hair. It is recommended to mix four drops of rosemary oil with one teaspoon of carrier oil (such as coconut or jojoba oil) and gently massage it into the scalp, whether the hair is dry or damp. Leave it on for at least an hour before washing it out.

Castor oil

Castor oil is known for deeply nourishing the scalp and hair. It contains ricinoleic acid, omega-6 fatty acids, proteins, and vitamin E – all of which have anti-inflammatory and nourishing properties, which help strengthen hair.

It is usually used as a pre-wash treatment – ​​applied to the scalp, rubbed in and left to act for a few hours before shampooing. It can also be used as an indispensable treatment, but in very small amounts, as it has a thick texture.

If you have fine or medium-thick hair, apply it from mid-lengths to ends and leave it on for up to 30 minutes before washing it out. For thick, coarse, and very dry hair, castor oil can be left on overnight or applied sparingly to the ends without rinsing.
