Does cutting your hair more often really accelerate its growth?
Many believe that regular hair cutting accelerates its growth, but science says otherwise. “That’s not true,” explains Desmond Tobin, professor of dermatological sciences at University College Dublin.
Hair does not grow from the ends, but from follicles – tiny structures located 2 to 4 millimeters below the scalp. In each follicle, hair forms long before it becomes visible on the surface. When you see it and decide to cut it, what you’re cutting is already dead, hardened tissue.
Hair grows at an average rate of about 1 cm per month during the growth phase which can last for several years. After that comes the shedding phase, the hair falls out, and a new growth cycle begins. Growth rate is largely determined by genetics and cannot be significantly accelerated by clippers, scalp massage or any of the other tricks often mentioned in popular hair tips.
Ginseng stimulates hair growth; sausage tree (Kigelia africana) inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase and helps with thinning hair; cinnamon, wheat protein and the essential oils of sage and rosemary cleanse the pores, strengthen the hair and stimulate hair follicles.

How to encourage healthy hair growth?
If your goal is to grow your hair, the priority is not to cut it all the time, but to preserve the health of the hair. “The best advice is to keep the hair in as natural a state as possible, with minimal exposure to aggressive chemical treatments or excessive heat”
This means: avoid frequent bleaching, aggressive coloring, irons and curling irons several times a week. Instead, focus on proper care – using mild shampoos and conditioners, occasional moisturizing with masks, gentle brushing, and protection from external factors like the sun and pollution. When hair is healthy and undamaged, it appears longer, thicker and shinier, even if the growth is not going faster than it is genetically destined to be.

In the end, getting a haircut still has its value – but not because of accelerated growth. Regular removal of damaged ends helps the hair to maintain its beautiful shape, prevents further damage and gives the illusion of more volume. So, scissors don’t make your hair grow faster, but your hair will definitely look better and healthier.
